DeepSeek Expands AI Capabilities with Image Recognition as Chipmakers Close Performance Gap
Hangzhou-based DeepSeek quietly rolled out image and video recognition for its flagship chatbot, catching up to multimodal features already offered by competitors. The new 'image recognition mode' joins existing 'expert' and 'flash' modes introduced earlier this month.
Senior researcher Chen Deli marked the launch with a nod to the company's whale logo: 'The little whale can now see.' The update follows DeepSeek-V4's release—a dual-model system comprising the high-power Pro variant (1.6 trillion parameters) for complex reasoning and the cost-efficient Flash version for scaled operations. Both support 1M-token context windows.
Meanwhile, local chip manufacturers demonstrated parity with U.S. firms in rapid production scaling—a sector where American dominance is eroding.
